ISPAD (Uluslararası Pediatrik ve Ergen Diyabet Derneği) 2024 bu yıl Lizbon’da gerçekleşti.
Ben de ISPAD’ın Lizbon planlamasını yapan ekibe mail gönderdim. Diyabetimben.com’dan ve kendimden bahsettim. Benim gibi tip-1 diyabette bilgi paylaşımına önem veren kişilere onların da önem verdiklerini vurgulayarak bana ücretsiz davetiye gönderdiler. Böylece ISPAD 2024 Lizbon’a katılma şansım doğdu.
Türkiye’den gelen, diyabete odaklanıp harika işler başaran ve gerçekten “insancıl hekimlik yapan”, hekimlerimizle de zaman geçirme şansımız oldu.
Amerika’dan Prof Dr Eda Cengiz, Türkiye’den Prof Dr İlknur Arslanoğlu, Prof Dr Erdal Eren, Prof Dr Atilla Çayır ve Prof Dr Fatih Gürbüzle beraber olduk. Onların sohbetlerine, anlattıklarına tanıklık etmek ve dinlemek de mutluluk verdi.
Şunu söyleyebilirim ki tip-1 diyabetin çözümüne muazzam odaklanılmış ve kim bilir belki 5-10 yıl içinde kesin bir tedaviyi duyabileceğiz.
ISPAD 2024’te ise diyabet teknolojileri ve yazılımları alanlarında standlar kurulmuştu. Hemen hemen hepsini gezdim. Ve bir de “tip-1 diyabette umut verici tedaviler” konulu panelin belli bir kısmını dinleyebildim.
Yazımın sonunda değil başında söylemek isterim; tip-1 diyabet teknolojileri biz tip-1 diyabetlilerin hayatını çok ama çok kolaylaştırıyor. Bize tip-1 diyabeti unutturuyor. Teknoloji gelişirken bu teknolojilere herkesin de ulaşması gerekiyor. Ancak biliyoruz ki dünyanın birçok yerinde halen insüline erişmek de büyük bir sıkıntı.
Teknoloji gelişirken ulaşılabilir olması, bunun devlet politikası haline gelmesi, diyabet gibi kronik yaşam şeklinin dünyaya ürettiği komplikasyon maliyetlerinin yüksekliği düşünülerek tedaviye ve teknoloji bütçe ayrılması en birincil öncelik olmalı.
Kök hücre alanında yapılan çalışmalar muazzam umut vaadediyor. Bağışıklık sistem saldırısından nakledilen kök hücreleri korumaktan direkt kök hücre nakline kadar birçok adımı özenle çalışılıyor.
Giyilebilir diyabet teknolojilerinde ise ilk Dexcom standını ardından da Insulet yani Omnipod’u üreten firmanın standını ziyaret ettim.
Omnipod Lizbon’da yok ama tıpkı Türkiye’de yaptığım gibi burada da firmanın pazarlama müdürünü yakaladım Dexcom standında ve “Omnipod nasıl Lizbon’da olamaz?” sorgulaması yaptım 🙂
Dexcom ise hem ürün kalitesi hem de güvenilir ölçümde altın standart. Sensör boyutları küçülmeye devam ediliyor. Çünkü biz kullanıcıların deneyimlerini ve ihtiyaçlarını göz ardı etmiyorlar.
Omnipod ise standıyla var ama yukarıda bahsettiğim gibi Portekiz’de yoklar 🙂 Burada da olmaları için çok sohbet ettik. Ve aynı zamanda Omnipod 5’i de dinledim. Omnipod 5 sadece Dexcom G6 ve FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus sensörlerle çalışıyor. Her ülkede de mutlaka bu sensörlerle çalışmıyormuş. Loop ya da 780G gibi sensör şekeri ölçüyor ve Omnipod 5’in insülini mi azaltacak, arttıracak mı gibi kararlar alması sağlanıyor.
“Omnipod Dash Türkiye’de verken Omnipod 5’i de Türkiye’ye getirmelisiniz. Türkiye pazarı ve biz tip-1 diyabetliler oldukça önemliyiz.” cümlelerini de es geçmeden kurdum 🙂
Medtronic’in yeni sensörü Simplera’yı da görme şansım oldum. Bu sensör de oldukça minik.
Aynı zamanda Simplera ile entegre çalışan akıllı insülin kalem sistemini de inceledim.
Özellikle vücuduna insülin pompası takmak istemeyip insülin kalemi kullanmayı tercih edenler için güzel bir seçenek. Kalemin akıllı olması ve sensör verileriyle mobil uygulamadan tip-1 diyabet yönetimi yapabilmek güzel bir fikir olsa gerek.
Simplera sensörü de dağıtıyorlardı demo olarak. Bakar mısınız ne kadar küçük 🙂
Tandem’in t:slim akıllı insülin pompaları da fark yaratmaya devam ediyor. Özellikle “Control IQ” Portekiz’de de bir distribütörü var. Ama ayak üstü bilgi aldığım kişinin İngilizcesi az olunca tam anlaşamadık. Portekiz’de t:slim geri ödeme politikası, maliyetler, eğitim vb konular için kendileriyle iletişime ayrıca geçeceğim.
Bu arada Control-IQ galiba en tercih edilen insülin pompası imiş. Algoritması ve birçok farklı sensör markasıyla entegre çalışması da ayrı bir esnekliği.
Abbott – FreeStyle Libre
FreeStyle Libre ekibini şu sebeple tebrik etmekte fayda var. Sensör boyutlarını küçültmek, kullanıcı ihtiyaçlarını dinlemeleri, geri bildirimleri almaları çok kıymetli.
Galiba sensör boyutunu da değiştirmeye başlayan ilk şirket Abbott idi.
Ypsomed de diyabet teknolojileri alanında önemli firmalardan biri.
CamAPS FX mobil uygulamasıyla ve Dexcom G6 veya FreeStyle Libre 3 ile entegre çalışan hibrit kapalı döngü insülin dağıtım sistemidir.
Capteur Protect de sensör ve insülin pompası bantları üreten bir firma.
Ben renkli bantları sevmiyorum ama yine de güzel bir alternatif. Suya dayanıklı ve aynı zamanda hipoalerjenik bantları var.

ISPAD (International Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes) 2024 was held in Lisbon this year.
I emailed the team that organized ISPAD in Lisbon. I talked about myself and Diyabetimben.com. Emphasizing that they also value people like me who prioritize information sharing in type 1 diabetes, they sent me a free invitation. Thus, I had the chance to attend ISPAD 2024 in Lisbon.
We also had the opportunity to spend time with our doctors from Turkey who focus on diabetes, achieve great work, and truly practice “humane medicine.”
We were together with Prof. Dr. Eda Cengiz from the USA, and Prof. Dr. İlknur Arslanoğlu, Prof. Dr. Erdal Eren, Prof. Dr. Atilla Çayır, and Prof. Dr. Fatih Gürbüz from Turkey. It was a joy to witness and listen to their conversations and what they shared.
I can say that there is an immense focus on finding a solution for type 1 diabetes, and who knows, maybe we will hear about a definitive treatment in 5–10 years.
At ISPAD 2024, booths were set up in the fields of diabetes technologies and software. I visited almost all of them and was able to listen to part of the panel on “promising treatments in type 1 diabetes.”
I want to say this at the beginning rather than at the end of my article: Type 1 diabetes technologies make our lives as type 1 diabetics much, much easier. They make us forget about type 1 diabetes. As technology develops, everyone should have access to these technologies. However, we know that in many parts of the world, accessing insulin is still a big problem.
As technology develops, its accessibility and making it a state policy should be the primary priority. Allocating budgets for treatment and technology by considering the high costs of complications produced by chronic conditions like diabetes worldwide is essential.
Studies in the field of stem cells offer tremendous hope. Many steps are being carefully worked on, from protecting transplanted stem cells from immune system attacks to direct stem cell transplantation.
In wearable diabetes technologies, I first visited the Dexcom booth, followed by the stand of Insulet, the company that produces Omnipod.
Omnipod isn’t available in Lisbon, but just like I did in Turkey, I caught the company’s marketing manager at the Dexcom stand and questioned, “How can Omnipod not be in Lisbon?” 🙂
Dexcom is the gold standard in both product quality and reliable measurement. The sensor sizes continue to shrink because they do not ignore the experiences and needs of us users.
Omnipod is present with its stand, but as I mentioned above, they are not in Portugal 🙂 We had many conversations about them being here too. I also learned about Omnipod 5. Omnipod 5 only works with Dexcom G6 and FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus sensors. It doesn’t necessarily work with these sensors in every country. Like Loop or 780G, it measures sensor glucose and allows Omnipod 5 to make decisions such as whether to decrease or increase insulin.
I made sure to say, “While Omnipod Dash is available in Turkey, you should also bring Omnipod 5 to Turkey. The Turkish market and we type 1 diabetics are quite important to you.” 🙂
I also had the chance to see Medtronic‘s new sensor, Simplera. This sensor is also quite small.
I examined the smart insulin pen system that works integrated with Simplera.
It is a good option, especially for those who do not want to wear an insulin pump and prefer to use an insulin pen. The idea of having a smart pen and being able to manage type 1 diabetes from a mobile application with sensor data is a great concept.
They were also distributing the Simplera sensor as a demo. Look how small it is 🙂
Tandem
Tandem’s t:slim smart insulin pumps continue to make a difference. Especially “Control IQ” has a distributor in Portugal as well. But since the person I got quick information from had limited English, we didn’t fully understand each other. I will get in touch with them separately regarding reimbursement policy, costs, training, etc., in Portugal.
By the way, Control IQ seems to be the most preferred insulin pump. Its algorithm and integration with many different sensor brands offer additional flexibility.
Abbott – FreeStyle Libre
It’s worthwhile to congratulate the FreeStyle Libre team for reducing sensor sizes, listening to user needs, and valuing feedback—they are very commendable efforts.
Apparently, Abbott was the first company to start changing sensor sizes.
Ypsomed is also one of the important companies in the field of diabetes technologies.
CamAPS FX is a hybrid closed-loop insulin delivery system that works integrated with the CamAPS FX mobile application and Dexcom G6 or FreeStyle Libre 3.
Capteur Protect is a company that produces sensor and insulin pump tapes.
I don’t like colored tapes, but still, it’s a good alternative. They have waterproof and hypoallergenic tapes.
